I am older! Also I bought more games.

I celebrated my birthday with my family and some friends a few weeks ago, it was nice! My mother asked if I wanted to invite more friends and have a bigger party, but I just felt like it was too much work.

706228_10151121054687273_2041323338_o  415014_10151121051567273_1477512268_o

We also had a celebration at work because I turned 30, a “round” number. Even got some gifts there too! All in all I got some useful gifts: some kitchenware, a Leatherman (chosen by my boss at work), and a few clothing articles. Rather glad for those gifts!

I played through Resident Evil 6 with my brother, and finished Professor Layton and The Miracle Mask. Right now the game I’m playing the most is Virtue’s Last Reward for the 3DS (there’s also a Vita version), which is an excellent game if you don’t mind Visual Novel types of games. Because the longest part of the game is the Novel part where you see the characters interact with each other, while the Escape part of the game is a point and click type of puzzle game where you have to pick up items and use them correctly in order to find the exit for the room you’re currently in.

Virtue's Last Reward

The game is a sequel to Nine Hours, Nine Persons, Nine Doors, one of my favorite games for the DS. The story of Virtue’s Last Reward is that nine people wake up in a locked facility, where they are told by a computer AI called Zero Jr. that they have to participate in a game that he calls the “Nonary Game”. The people have to try to escape the game, while they are also trying to find out which of the participants they can trust and which might be Zero Sr. himself, the person who arranged the whole thing and created Zero Jr. At certain points in the story you can make choices, and the story will diverge into different paths depending on your choices.

I don’t want to spoil too much of the story so I’ll try not going into details, but in any case, what I liked about those two games is finding out the back story for each person little by little, and figuring out what is the deal with the game and the multiple endings! While the first game had 6 different endings, this sequel states that it has 24 different endings! Luckily they added the possibility to directly jump to any game path that you have already played to. In the first game you had to play through the game from the beginning to get the other endings, though you could fast-forward quite quickly through text that you have already seen before (you can also do this in Virtue’s Last Reward).

WARNING: The 3DS version has a save bug which may corrupt your save file! And there’s only one save file, so there’s no way of making backups… If you save in the PEC (pressure exchange) puzzle room or the Crew’s Quarters puzzle room, the game may crash, corrupting your save file. However, I never saved in a puzzle room, but my save file got corrupted when I saved in the PEC room during the Novel section of the game! Some people say that the safest is to save only in corridors and warehouses. But in any case, definitely avoid saving in the PEC or Crew’s Quarters rooms, no matter if it’s during the puzzle or during the novel section!

humblebundle

Also there’s a new Humble Bundle, with games from the economically challenged company THQ. Amongst the games are Darksiders, Metro 2033 and, if you pay above the average of currently 5.65USD, Saints Row: The Third. So far I’ve only tested out Darksiders, it seems to have amazing nVidia 3D Vision support! I had to download the XBox 360 controller emulator to get my non-XBox controller to work with the game in Windows. Oh yeah, for those who are using non-Windows computers, please note that this bundle only works in Windows, and only with Steam (it’s not possible to download the games DRM-free). As of this moment there are about 10 days left to get this bundle.

I also bought Starcraft II: Wings of Liberty when it was on a 50% sale last week. It is a neat game, but the 3D Vision support is a bit problematic, because the 3D settings that works best with the cutscenes and mission selection part of the game, doesn’t work so well during the main game, so I have to adjust the settings when it switches to and from the main game. Maybe I should just give up 3D in this game…

Man, so much for not buying games… At least I didn’t end up buying the Wii U. I went to SpillExpo in Lillestrøm (barely half hour away from Oslo), a gaming expo in Norway, but I was rather disappointed with the size of the expo. It was even smaller than Gamex! And they didn’t have the Wii U for sale! I had already tried the Wii U at Gamex, so I weren’t really that excited about trying it again.

I did get to try Dead Space 3, Paper Mario: Sticker Star and Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon. And apparently we could go to JuleExpo (Christmas expo) and antiques expo for no extra cost once we were inside, which was at least somewhat amusing. Just had a quick look at those though. Almost should have had a closer look since we had pay money to enter, but I guess then we’d only have more people try to sell us stuff… While at SpillExpo there were just too few shops in my opinion.

Last Friday I also went to a friend’s place for dinner and board games. Played Power Grid, a game that we’ve had for a few years but haven’t played much in a while. It was quite fun, although we found out we did get some of the rules wrong! There are just too many rules to keep in mind… Still, I definitely want to try the game again with the proper rules some time. Also played Quarriors and Dominion.

Games asides, I have been using Netflix quite a bit, usually watching shows on my second monitor while doing other stuff. I’ve tried to catch up on certain shows that I wanted to see, and I’ve also watched a few other shows that I hadn’t watched before. Watched through season 1 of The Walking Dead, season 1 and 2 of Fringe, and currently watching through Dexter. Also once in a while I watch Archer and Doctor Who, and I watched a few of Russell Peters’ stand-up shows, they are quite funny! Been quite a while since I saw his shows for the first time, so it was fun seeing that they’re now available on Netflix.

I think I’ll go and play more Virtue’s Last Reward now. Since my save file got corrupted I’ve been putting the game on auto mode to get through the text while doing other stuff (so I’ve been running it instead of Netflix). Luckily I can also quite quickly play through the puzzle rooms that I’ve already played since I remember how to solve them. I still haven’t gotten through all the story paths that I had done before the save got corrupted, but I’ve taken some new story paths too so I won’t get too bored with going through the same things again.

Mostly gaming

Last few weeks have been rather uneventful. I did go to the skiing trip with the youth group near the end of February, but I didn’t do any skiing. Just relaxed at the cottage, using the sauna a few times. Besides that, I decided that I’d rather try to spend some time trying to play through more of my games than to travel around nowadays.

The games I’ve finished since my last post:

  • The Secret of Chateau de Moreau (iPad): Got all the endings. Funny thing is that the different endings pretty much contradicts each other, since the killer is a different person depending on which ending you get! (Spoiler hidden in case anyone cares. Selecting the text should show the text.)
  • Anomaly: Warzone Earth (Android): Only bothered to play through the campaign mode, haven’t tried the Assault mode much.
  • Superbrothers: Sword and Sworcery EP (iPad): Point and click with some sword fights. A bit surreal. Don’t know if I would recommend this game to “everyone”.
  • Lost Planet (XBox 360): very anime’ish over-the-top storyline. More mecha action than I expected, thought it was “just another third person shooter”. All right entertainment.
  • Prince of Persia: Two Thrones (PC): Had to retry quite a few times on some of the boss fights and the last horse carriage sequence, but it did feel good once I managed to do it! And it had a good ending, compared to the previous and also the next Prince of Persia game.
  • Prince of Persia (2008, PC, the cel-shaded one with the gauntlet): I liked this game more than the previous ones, maybe because this game is closer to the “current generation” of games and the gameplay “flows” better somehow. The previous ones did feel a bit dated. Anyways, the ending is a disappointing “To be continued”. I couldn’t download the DLC epilogue, so I watched the ending for that on YouTube, but apparently the ending there is still “To be continued”. Meh.
  • Catherine (XBox 360): To describe it very quickly, it’s a puzzle game with lots of cutscenes (some anime cutscenes and some rendered) and talking to people, with full voice acting. About adult topics like making decisions, taking responsibility for your choices, and not cheating on your girlfriend. Or cheating on your girlfriend, depending on how you want to play it. I enjoyed the story and cutscenes in the game and got surprisingly addicted to the puzzle part of the game after a while. Got all the endings, and might have tried some puzzles past the story mode, if I weren’t still trying to finish other games.
  • Resident Evil: Revelations (3DS): Very Resident Evil. I like 3D, though it’s sometimes hard to avoid the ghosting (seeing “double”).

I ended up buying Chaos Rings Ω, Catherine and L.A. Noire: The Complete Edition because they were on sale. Even though I try not to buy any games before I finish the ones I have. Well from now I will not buy any games. Unless they are really, really good. Meh. Well, it seems like I did manage to finish quite a few games so it might not be too bad.

L.A. Noire was very laggy on my laptop even at lowest graphical settings, but it worked slightly better on the TV computer. So I might play it there, although I am planning to build a new gaming computer this year. After researching a little, it seems like I might want to wait for Intel to release Ivy Bridge, which should be faster and use less power than the current generation Sandy Bridge. It might not be available before June, but I have quite a few XBox 360 games left anyways, so waiting shouldn’t really be a problem.

Bought a new gaming keyboard (Logitech G510) and mouse (Ideazon Reaper), because I got a few discount coupons. No idea what I’ll use all those programmable keys for, though I hear Diablo III is coming out in a few months. Maybe it’ll be useful there somehow. The keyboard also has a display which can be programmed to show game stats for games which supports it, but is it really easier/faster/better to look at the stats on the keyboard as opposed to having them onscreen? Wasn’t it more of a problem back when computer resolutions was lower? Oh well, it is nice having the time and date or the currently playing song showing on the display.

While getting the discounts were much of the reason why I bought these, I was also slightly annoyed by the fact that my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse would sometimes suddenly disconnect. So it’ll be nice to use wired accessories again. There is however a problem with the keyboard driver hanging when resuming from sleep mode, so I have to kill the keyboard driver and restart it for the keyboard screen and special buttons to work properly again. The keyboard itself still works though, so if I don’t need any of those special functions I can mostly just ignore it.

Spent most of today going through my e-mail, tidying my apartment and desk, then suddenly deciding to move around the desk in my room. Currently using the window sill for my monitor to free up more space on my desk, it works but I’m not quite satisfied with the monitor being too far to the right of the center of the desk… Considering to either buy a new desk or buy a wall mount for the monitor instead. Or both.

Oh yeah, also spent many hours yesterday and today trying to replace the screen on my old phone. It worked!

2012-03-31 12.02.12

And then it stopped working. And then I gave up because I had already spent too many hours taking it apart and putting it back together again over and over, so I just bagged it and stashed it in the drawer. Probably throwing it away some day.

In the end I didn’t get much time to play Mass Effect 2 today… Maybe I’ll sneak in a few hours after doing laundry now. But it’s Easter vacation next week anyhows, I want to try and finish a few games before going to Easter camp!

Paris

Was in Paris last weekend with my brothers and some other friends. It was surprisingly cold! While the temperature itself wasn’t that much colder than Norway, it felt colder, might be because Paris is more humid than Norway…? But the weather was clear, so we got to see the sightseeing spots pretty well at least!

The Eiffel tower, also a lamp post that I now see stands out kinda prominently in this photo. Meh.

I found out that my Galaxy Nexus has a panorama mode, it is pretty neat! Got some cool panorama photos from the Eiffel Tower. I guess a good thing about going to Paris in winter is that there is probably a lot less tourists. We still had to queue to get up the Eiffel Tower, but I’m sure the queue must’ve been much shorter than during summer. Probably. Or it could’ve been negated by the fact that they only opened one eleveator instead of multiple ones. Anyways we had also bought tickets beforehand so we could take the shorter queue.

I probably didn’t hold the phone straight enough when panning, so the last two panoramas ended up unstraight. To my defense my hands were cold and numb.

We had a few nice meals, although on the three course menus we generally didn’t like all the courses. Foie gras wasn’t really to our taste, but I guess it could’ve been the restaurant we chose that didn’t make it well? I wouldn’t know, probably won’t try it again. I did like the Chinese style frog legs I had at the Chinese restaurant which Beyoncé visits when she goes to Paris (according to the owner, he had a photo on the wall with him, his wife and Beyoncé). Don’t remember the name of the restaurant though. Other than that I had pretty ordinary food. Oh, I did try "Sliver of kangaroo" at a hotel, but it tasted so much like normal beef that I’m still not sure if I just got an ordinary beef steak. Oh, had one KFC lunch. Just because we can.

Unfortunately our flight back on Sunday was cancelled, and while we did get a new flight on Monday and also free hotel for the night, we ended up waiting at the airport almost the whole day to get our hotel rooms, so we couldn’t go for more sightseeing. Also the sucky Formula 1 hotel didn’t accept the first voucher we got, so we had to go back to the airport to get a new voucher for another hotel… Additionally, it was very difficult to get taxis because most of them wouldn’t drive in the snow, so we had some trouble getting around. On Monday we went to the wrong bus stop and almost couldn’t get to the airport in time, but eventually we managed to get a taxi. My brother (who ended up in another hotel) said that the bus was almost full anyways (because so many people got their flights cancelled and were staying at hotels around the airport), so even if we were on the right stop, we might not have gotten on the bus!

Eventually we got back home.

The_Riddler_Batman_Arkham_City

I spent most of this week getting all the Riddler’s trophies/challenges. Finally got 100%, though it was kinda disappointing that the Riddler sidequest was finished before I got 100% of the trophies… but I can understand the choice to make it easier to finish the sidequest for those who don’t want to spend all that time doing all the trophies and challenges. I probably won’t try to play through all the challenge maps, probably I’ll play another console game now. Hmm…. Dead Rising 2? Mass Effect 2? I think I kinda feel like playing some short action games first though.

The Secret of Chateau de Moreau

I bought The Secret of Chateau de Moreau on my iPad, Enoch told me about this game. It’s a point and click type of adventure game with some puzzles and visual novel elements. The handdrawn graphics and music style is very similar to Hotel Dusk, and the "present evidence and explain alibis" part of the game resembles Ace Attorney (Phoenix Wright) a little. Plus there are a number of different puzzles, kinda like Professor Layton (and a lot of other adventure games too I guess). The Secret of Chateau de Moreau doesn’t feel quite as polished as the mentioned games though, the interface sometimes feels kinda "simple" and not as smooth as console games, and there are noticable spelling errors in the game text. Also the music, while good, seems to consist of rather short tunes, so you’ll notice that the music is looped after maybe roughly half a minute.

The story follows an adopted son of a rich family, who has recently returned after studying abroad, because his adoptive father has just died. It is then revealed that the father was poisoned, and you get four days to find out what happened. Each day (at least as far as I’ve played) plays as a regular adventure game where you have to walk around, talk to people, pick up items and find out where (and how) to use them, solve puzzles to get more items, etc. At the end of the day the main character have to explain what he’s found out to the his siblings, trying to prove people (and himself) innocent (or guilty).

The story is interesting if not very unique. I do feel like I want to find out who the murderer is, and also finding out more about each of the siblings! And there are a few comical characters and scenes to break up the seriousness in the rest of the game, which makes it not as "heavy" as Hotel Dusk. I quite like this game so far, I only wish it was available on the Android (since I had mostly stopped carrying my iPad around after I got my new phone). Hopefully similar games will be released for Android in the future.

humblebundleandroid

I also bought the Humble Bundle for Android, although I already had finished a few of the games (finished World of Goo on the PC and Osmos on the iPad). Well it’s partly to support charity, so it’s fine. Anomaly is a decent game at least, and Toki Tori seems interesting (waiting for them to release a version which will work on my Galaxy Nexus). Edge was not that interesting in my opinion, it’s pretty much just running around and trying not to fall down before you reach the exit. (From their trailer it seems like it might get pretty difficult later on, though I haven’t played that far yet.)
