Some Android games that I have and like

Oh, happy Norwegian National day! For this occasion, here is a video that my brother Leon made last year for our Toronto Missions Training trip:

Lately I’ve been working on making my own Android game. I used to program a bit on games before, last game project I made seems to be about 5 years ago. I hardly ever made any actual full games though. I tried running some of them, they still work! But lots of bugs, since I never got myself to finish making any of those games. Hopefully I can get myself to keep working on this new project. Also my old games have horrible balance, some of the game features are so complex (or buggy) that even I have no idea what I’m doing! But the core of each game is decent fun I guess. I may upload my old games to my blog some time.

app-store Android Market

Anyways, often when talking with people about why I prefer an Android phone rather than iPhone, one of the things I usually admit is that the app store on the iPhone (iTunes App Store) is still better than the one on Android phones (Android Market). There are more quality games for iPhone (and iPad, which I actually do own, because I bought it last summer back when the only Android tablet was the Galaxy Tab). The other thing I admit is that the user interface on iPhone and iPad does often feel smoother than on Android. Apparently, even on newer Android phone, there still is a noticable amount of lag when moving around in the user interface. Granted, even my iPad does lag from time to time, but in general it feels like it does that a lot less than my Android phone. (My Android phone is only half a year “older” than my iPad, so it’s not an outdated phone by that much.)

Still, there are lots of games available on Android phones now, so surely some of them must be good ones! Is what I’m wondering. I do see that there are a few JRPG-looking games on the market, but I haven’t tried any of those yet, even though I downloaded a few. One of the biggest problem I have with Android games is that the touchscreen on my Acer Liquid sucks, it doesn’t support proper multitouch! So games with touch-screen controls just won’t work well because running while jumping won’t necessarily work properly. But even on the iPad, I just find touch controls being difficult because I can’t feel where the buttons are, so sometimes I end up moving my thumb a bit too far and missing the buttons! But games that are controlled by “single touch” or tapping are okay.

Here is a list of games that I’ve downloaded on my Android phone and that I enjoy playing from time to time:

Star Traders RPG
Star Traders RPG

Back when I had a Palm PDA (I think I had the m105), I had a game called Space Trader (oh, that game still has a live website, cool!), which was the game I remember best on the Palm. You are essentially a space captain who has to make a living by buying and selling various goods across space, by doing missions, and/or by attacking other space ships (attacking space pirates if you want to be a good guy, and attacking other traders if you want to be a bad guy). You can then use the cash to upgrade your space ship or buy better ships, in order to make more money.

This game, Star Traders RPG, is pretty much the same kind of game, although it is a lot more complex than Space Trader. For one thing, politics makes a noticable impact on your actions’ consequences: If two of the factions in the game start a trade embargo, just trading with one of the factions will make you lose reputation with the other faction! I actually ended up as a “Crime lord” with one faction just because of trade embargos and how I kept forgetting to check the faction conflicts. Other than that, there also seems to be a bit more statistics that you have to keep track of. Both your captain and your ship has various stats that you can upgrade. For the captain you get stats that can give you cheaper prices when buying, make his piloting and fighting skills better, etc. For the ship you can get more cargo space, better armor, more weapon ammo and similar things.

I’m currently playing on Normal mode, which actually prevents my captain from dying. Whenever he would’ve died, I can instead make a lucky escape, and the only drawback is that I lose all my cargo and that my ship usually is pretty broken and need repairs. Doesn’t seem like I lose any cash either.

I kind of like these kind of games, but the game is heavily text-based, so it might not be for everyone. This is not an action game in any way! Even battles are just text-based (though there are pictures of the ships involved in battle and explosion animations). I guess if you like strategy games like Sim City, where you have to keep track of various statistics as you play, you might like this game.

Androminion
Androminion

Androminion is an Android version of the board/card game Dominion, with cards from the first game and the two first expansions (Intrigue and Seaside). The game doesn’t have any of the graphics from the cards (since they would be copyrighted), and it doesn’t have any multiplayer option yet. But the game’s AIs are quite good, so playing against them is a fun challenge! If you want to play a quick game of Dominion this is a great option, since the AI players are a lot quicker than human players, so games usually end faster than when playing the actual card game against other humans. Note that the game doesn’t save the progress, so if you quit a game midways through, you’ll have to start a new game next time.

Bonsai Blast
Bonsai Blast

This is a great Zuma-like game, where you have to shoot bubbles at a moving line of bubbles, and match up three of the same color to pop them. The difficulty gets pretty tough in the later stages! I still haven’t beat this game, partly because I’ve lost the progress a few times from reflashing my phone and getting it broken.

Fling
Fling

Fling is a pretty simple puzzle game, where you have to drag a ball to make it go in one direction untill it hits another ball and pushes it away from the board. You have to make sure that in the end only one ball is left! Tons of stages and various difficulty levels to makes it possible to find a difficulty level that suits you. Great for a quick puzzle during breaks. The developer of this game, mToy also has a few other puzzle games that have tons of stages and also are great for playing a stage or two during a break!

Jewels
Jewels

A free Bejeweled clone, I guess this hardly needs any explanation. 🙂 Has a normal mode (ends when no more moves are possible) and a timed mode (ends when timer runs out).

Smiley Pops
Smiley Pops

A puzzle game that reminds a lot of Bejeweled, you get a hexagonal grid filled with balls that you have to rotate around to match up three or more of the same color in a row in order to pop them.

Replica Island
Replica Island

A platforming game where you play as the Android maskot, running (gliding) and jumping around, stomping on enemies and collecting pearls and gems. And uncover a hidden plot! Probably. Haven’t played past the first few stages yet. This game supports tilt controls (with onscreen buttons for jumping/flying and attacking), so it’s playable even on my phone!

Townsmen 6
Townsmen

I have actually played a few of the Townsmen games on my Nokia phones, seem to remember that they were fun to play. So I installed the free version of the 6th one. But I haven’t gotten around to playing it much yet. Anyways it’s a city-building game where you have to grow the population of your city by building various buildings for gathering wood, gathering food, making metal and tools and then building more houses to allow for more people to join your city. (Roughly, it’s been a while since I played the games.) Well since it’s got a free version there’s no reason not to try it.

Pumpkins VS. Monsters
Pumpkins VS Monsters

From the game’s name you might think that this is some kind of Plants vs Zombies clone, but it’s a completely different type of game. In this game, you have to “shoot” monsters by grouping together three or more pumpkins of the same color on the bottom screen, and then flick them upwards to shoot them as projectiles. It was surprisingly fun! Though I haven’t played more than the first stages. I’m assuming that as the game progresses, you’ll face different types of monsters (otherwise the game would get boring quickly).

Agh, spent too much time writing the blog post and surfing the web, didn’t get to do any programming on my game today. Time to go to my parents for a barbeque too. I really want to finish making a demo of my Android game during this week, just because that’s what I decided that I wanted to do… Ah well, we’ll see.

Games and stuff

Since last post I’ve finished a bunch of games.

Batman: Game of the Year Edition XBox 360 Boxart Batman and Joker
Batman: Arkham Asylum – There weren’t so many of Batman’s enemies actually in the game, though character profiles for many of his enemies are unlockable by solving Riddler’s puzzles and finding his hidden trophies. I actually found all the secrets before beating the game! The fact that some of the secret hidden items are maps that show where all the other secrets are, really made it easier. Otherwise I probably wouldn’t have bothered.

Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 1 Boxart Penny Arcade Adventures Episode 2 Boxart Penny Arcade Adventures screenshot
Penny Arcade Adventures: On The Rain-Slick Precipice of Darkness – Episode One And Two – Somewhat enjoyable, though the humor is a bit hit-and-miss. Still, too bad that they discontinued the game, it was supposed to be four games in total I think. It was kind of interesting that you could create your own character and have that character carry through through all episodes, interacting with characters from their web comic (which also has some hit-and-miss humor, but I still keep reading the comic).

Crysis Boxart Crysis: Warhead Boxart Crysis screenshot
Crysis and Crysis: Warhead – I like the fact that for once, regenerating health is actually explained (because the main characters use advanced nanosuits that self-repair and apparently have infinitely self-refillable energy). And the various superpowers that the suit give are nice to have, though I weren’t particularly good at using them while fighting enemies. Stealing the enemies’ vehicles and then shooting them from inside said vehicles was usually more effective. Just had to make sure I got out of them before they exploded. (I’m sure the vehicles aren’t supposed to explode when the enemies are just shooting at it with guns, but whatever.)

Oh, my laptop overheated when playing the Crysis games! I had to turn all settings down to low to prevent overheating, but with Crysis: Warhead it would overheat anyway. Just having my laptop overheat and shutdown didn’t bother me that much, but the biggest problem was that the game sometimes stopped working after the laptop shutdown from overheating, forcing me to uninstall and reinstall the game for it to work again! I ended up buying the Coolermaster NotePal Ergostand to help cooling the laptop down. Seems to work, Warhead didn’t overheat my laptop once after I started using this.

Coolermaster NotePal ErgoStand Notebook stand

I picked this notebook cooler over various others because many of the other notebook coolers didn’t have adjustable stands. With this one I could raise the laptop higher, so I can use the laptop screen as additional screen estate if I want. Without having to prop the laptop up with books or whatever I find in my apartment, I mean. Also this cooler has a 4-port USB hub. So it’s almost like a docking station! (Although I almost never take my laptop with me anywhere anymore, the iPad works quite well as a substitute. So it’s not as if I need a docking station, I mean.)

In the photo you can see the 3DS resting in its docking cradle. I must admit I haven’t played much on the 3DS since there just aren’t any good games out yet. But I like taking 3D photos with it!

I made Mississippi mud pie for my brother’s birthday!

Me and Elin tried to use up all the letters in Bananagrams.

I found a great utility called StereoPhoto Maker which can batch convert the 3D photos (.MPO files) into side-by-side JPEG files (like the one above here) or into red/cyan images if you want. (Though I haven’t tried that since I figured most of my friends probably don’t have a pair of red/cyan 3D glasses available.)

In the photo of my laptop stand you can also see something else I bought recently, a Logitech G35 Surround Sound Headset. Can’t say I’m overly impressed by the simulated surround, I felt that it was hard to hear whether sounds were coming from behind me or not when playing Crysis, though left and right was (not surprisingly) easier to distinguish. Nevertheless, the headset definitely gives better sound quality than the cheap headsets I usually buy! So I don’t think I’m going to try and exchange it to try and get a "better" surround headset. I guess there’s no guarantee another surround headset would work better for me anyhows.

Logitech G35

Also, even though my new policy is to not buy any games unless they are games that I have really looked forward to getting, I ended up buying the third Humble Bundle. The game I mainly bought the bundle for is Trine, which is a platform game slightly resembling the old Lost Vikings, but less puzzley and more actiony. Also I bought the bundle to support the Finnish developer company (Frozenbyte) which made the games in this bundle. (Finland is right next to Norway!) And to support charities. Well anyways, Trine will probably be the next game on my playing list. Haven’t tried the Shadowgrounds games yet, but they seem to be a bit like the old (ancient!) Alien Breed: Tower Assault game that I tried a long time ago! I kind of liked Tower Assault, but I think I kept dying on the first stage so I gave up playing it.

Oh, I also bought lots of other stuff online, in particular I bought a pair of shoes:

bobbie-burns-bacis-slip-in-1003444 (1)

It was only because I got a coupon for that webstore! I’ve now got 9 or so pairs of shoes in my apartment. Way too many. I will never buy more shoes unless I throw away some of my old ones!

Aaaaand that will be all for today. I should clean my room. Maybe tomorrow. *sigh*

Got my 3DS

You’re probably tired of hearing about it by now, since I’ve been tweeting and Facebooking about this all week. But anyways, I picked up my 3DS at the post office today, and have been testing it out most of the evening.

2011-03-25 17.24.54
First generation meets last generation.

I have mentioned this to some of my friends: I have actually been waiting to buy the 3DS since the day I bought my DS back in 2004! So to say. Not that I knew Nintendo was going to make a 3DS. The thoughts that went through my mind when buying the original DS was something like "Well this is 3D graphics… but it would’ve been even better if it was real 3D graphics! If anyone made a game console like that, I’d buy it right away." And so I bought the 3DS right away. Maybe the next iPad will be the iPad 3D!

Anyways, some of first impressions on the 3DS:

  • When testing the 3DS at the launch event, I though it was sometimes pretty hard to find the infamous "sweet spot", but when testing the 3DS at home on my couch it was a bit easier. It might’ve been harder at the event because I was sometimes standing, and maybe also talking with the people at the event made it harder to hold the 3DS still.
  • I slightly regret buying Super Street Fighter VI: 3D Edition instead of a more story or progress-based adventure or action game. But I guess I might try and play through the arcade mode with all the characters to listen to their stories, however cheesy they are. The 3D does work in any case, I kinda like playing in the "over the shoulder" mode. Oh, and the internet mode worked! I got to fight two online opponents while testing the arcade mode (before I decided to turn off "accept requests" to finish arcade mode). It was some lag though, might’ve been because the first player probably was Japanese. Ah, my condolences to the Japanese people!
    japan-beforeafter
Almost all the houses are just gone… so unbelievable.
I pray that they manage to fix their reactor and that the people most directly affected will have the strength to rebuild their cities and restart their lives. I did donate some money to them.
  • There are a couple of AR games, which are quite fun, though there isn’t much variation. Hopefully it’ll be possible to unlock more stages or so… There are indeed some unlockable modes/toys that I have to buy using "Game coins", which I have to collect by walking around with the 3DS in standby mode. In fact the 3DS is doing so much stuff in standby mode that I worry about how much it will affect batterylife! But I guess the screens are still probably what uses more battery, and those would be turned off in standby mode. I also did test the shooting gallery game with a giant photo of the AR card on my computer monitor, which worked! But it would require much more space around me to play it properly. I should print out some big versions of the AR cards and play with it out on the street! 😀HNI_0003
Game characters pop out of the AR cards! Then you can move them around and make poses.
  • The 3D camera works, and I managed to make a 3D Youtube video of the photos:
Some 3DS photos in Youtube 3D

But it turns out that the 3D photos are only 640×480, which is pretty crappy. So using the 3DS as my main travel camera might not be such a good idea. Maybe I could buy a 3D camera to complement the 3DS? Ah, which brings me to another point:

  • Copying 3D photos from internet and viewing them on my 3DS worked! Turns out I just have to rename them in a specific way. It’s fun. 🙂
  • The music player works and has a few interesting options like changing the speed and pitch of the song, 8-bitifying the song and other effects and allowing you to drum along or play various other sound effects along with the song. It also has some nice 3D visualizations, which might make it more attractive to keep the lid open while playing music, preferably while charging the 3DS. Going to the home screen stopped the music though. At least the music keeps playing when you close the lid, which really is a requirement if you want to use the 3DS for listening to music while walking around.
  • The charging cradle is nice, though it turns out it doesn’t charge by magnetic induction after all. There are two metal pieces that are pushed out from the back of the cradle when a button on the cradle is being pushed by the 3DS. Quite a basic mechanic, but I guess it is still a bit more fancy than having to fit the charging cable into the 3DS when putting it on the cradle! There is also a hatch that can be opened at the back of the charging cradle, about which I have not been able to find any info.
    2011-03-26 01.06.54
Mysterious hatch! Why are you there?
There is nothing in the instruction manual about it, and nobody online has even mentioned it. Though if I had to make a guess, I’d say it’s probably there to make sure the 3DS still fits in the cradle even if there are some kind of 3rd party accessories attached to the top…? Not that it seems to be any ports for accessories on the back of the 3DS, besides cartridge slot itself.
  • I’m disappointed that there is no internet browser or Nintendo shop available yet. Let me download games and movies! I would definitely buy a 3D movie! According to the Nintendo support page, the Nintendo eShop won’t be available before late May. Oh well, the system update added a bonus 3D movie with random clips of mostly nature videos. It’s nice!
  • And finally, I haven’t gotten any headaches from looking at the 3D effect yet. I managed to play through the arcade mode in Street Fighter once (on easiest setting) without having to turn off the 3D. Though I have to admit that I started finding it harder to find the sweet spot when doing the final battles, so I guess my eyes did get tired…

Man, I always spend way too much time writing blogposts. There’s already too much text and it’s late, so I’ll just stop here, and maybe play a bit more on the 3DS before sleeping. Tomorrow my plan is to finish Batman: Arkham Asylum. In 3D! Yesh!
